Glycemic index is the index, which relates to the measurement or
identification of impact of food on the blood sugar level of humans.
Different type of food have different impact on blood sugar level,
some may raise it more than others may. Foods that break down quickly
during the process of digestion have the highest glycemic index and
they are also known as dietary glycemic index. Glucose a type of
sugar, which forms after breaking of food in the body, is the main
source of energy to human body. Glycemic index helps in measuring that
how fast the glucose travels and how a food affects blood glucose
level. High glycemic index foods raise blood sugar level more as
compared to food with low glycemic index value.
Now, body of different people reacts differently to different kinds
of food that is why glycemic index cannot be generalized to one it is
different for different people. Foods that have high carbohydrate
content have high glycemic index and respond immediately to blood
while food with low glycemic index reacts slowly and gradually with
the blood. Pasta and potatoes are examples of food items, which have
high glycemic index. Brown bread, soybean are examples of food items
with low glycemic index. High glycemic index foods are those, which
have the value of more than 70.
A proper level of glucose is to be maintained if that is not done
than the person feels weak who have very low level of glucose. People
tend to stop eating food with carbohydrates in order to lose their
weight and because of this their glucose level is very low and they
feel weak.
High glycemic index foods; watermelon, baked potatoes, rice cakes,
Kaiser roll, corn chips, honey, puffed wheat, cream of wheat, mashed
potatoes, and dates. Other examples of foods in this list are
doughnuts, jelly beans, grape nuts flakes, French bread, tofu frozen
dessert, corn flakes, pumpkin, parsnips, weetabix, coco pops, bran
flakes, tapioca, puffed crisp bread, maple flavored syrup, scones,
pretzels, white bread, soda crackers, Swede, millet, broad beans,
carrot, biscuits and cookies.
Health is a concern for all today, be it a child's health or an
adults health almost everyone today is suffering from one or the other
problem, which may include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity. In
addition, among all obesity is the major one. Ranking is given from 0
to 100. Eating pure glucose will have a ranking of 100.
Food with the index ranking of 95 will give glucose as having a
pure glucose but the food with index rating of 20 will not raise sugar
level that much. A balance diet is very important. Having a diet with
high glycemic value may increase the chances of obesity which may
later lead to other problems as well. In order to lose weight food
with low glycemic value is to be consumed. So consume a balance diet
between low glycemic food and high glycemic food and stay healthy
forever.
