Researchers asked 938 volunteers to keep a strict 800 calorie-a-day diet for two months, then split them into five groups, every following a various low-fat diet to maintain their weight. From the five groups, only those that kept the high protein, low glycemic index (GI) diet managed to maintain their weight over the following six months. The other put on 0.5 kg (1.1lb) on average. Those on a low protein, high GI diet the worst performing regime put on practically 2 kg (4.4lb).
